On Tuesday, September 24 2019, the Kasárne Cultural Centre in Košice was filled with young programmers. For the first time, the World Championship Olympiad (WRO) was held in Slovakia.
The main organizer of the competition was Edutus Slovakia, which prepared the event with the professional support of our foundation. The aim of the WRO is to bring science closer to young people and encourage them to study technology and computer science. The first Slovak WRO Championship was also supported by the IT Valley in Košice, T-Systems Slovakia Ltd., Unique People Ltd., CSI Leasing Slovakia. The UPJŠ and volunteers from the Department of Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence TUKE helped with the organisation as well.
The competition took place in the Regular category, which is focused on lego robotics. There were 3 age groups: elementary (less than 12 years), junior (13-15), senior (16-19 years). 15 teams applied for the competition. “As a pilot championship, we wanted to test the students’ interest. The number of registered teams is according to our expectations. We believe that there will be even more interest in the next championships that we are planning next May, ”said Angelika Hanesz, the manager of the Talentum Foundation.
Teams from Košice, Michalovce, Liptovsky Hradok, Kralovsky Chlmec, Banska Stiavnica, Banska Bystrica and Samorin participated in the Slovak Championship. During the day under the guidance of one coach, 2 to 3-member teams competed and built robots with LEGO MINDSTORMS.
The winners of the individual age groups Zeus and RobIpari qualified to the WRO World Cup, which will be held in Győr, Hungary, this November.
